Why I joined the 12 Week Challenge
I joined the 12 Week Challenge for so many reasons. For far too long, I had been on the weight loss merry-go-round. I would have success for a little while but then let things get the better of me before reverting back to old habits.
After turning 40 in December and having a mini mid-life crisis, I decided that I needed to make myself a priority for the first time in a long time. Not long after, the challenge info started popping up around the club and I knew that this would be the great kick start I needed…
Finding my motivation
Being determined in nature, once I commit to something, I put everything into it. I knew that this was going to be as much a mental challenge as a physical one, and for me I spent a lot of time preparing myself for what I needed to do to achieve the goals I had set.

I have an extremely demanding executive day job, in addition to three volunteer board roles, so having success was all about planning how, when and where I was going to fit this all in, and constantly reminding myself WHY I was doing this.
Not long after joining the challenge, in a Zumba class, I had what I thought was just a ‘clutz’ moment. In reality I had torn my Achilles and fractured my heel. In the past, this would have been enough for me to throw my hands up, take the easy option to quit and admit defeat. But then I asked myself if I was truly happy with that? Could I work around it? So…. surprising even myself, I continued on. It actually became what fuelled me. The frustration of changing my “routine”, needing to modify training, missing out on all the classes I really loved and learning to love the dreaded cycle classes meant that this “control freak” had to go with the flow for once, as it was out of my control.

The most unexpected benefit
By far though, the most unexpected benefit of this challenge has been the friends made along the way. The Orange team has hands down been the most supportive group of women that helped pick me up when I was at my lowest and in pain. We still train as a team even though the challenge has finished – that in itself shows how well we have bonded! The club Fitness Titles event was a clear standout for our team as it really brought us together. Then there are all the other girls from Bootcamp, team leaders, food coaches and all the Fernwood staff who made the whole challenge so much fun along the way.
I am really happy to say that I exceeded the weight loss goal I had set for myself and hit my goal of coming in every single day of the 12 weeks (sometimes even twice a day!). I also changed my mindset so that I didn’t have to feel guilty about putting myself first. I still have a way to go before I reach the place I would really like to be, but the 12 Week Challenge definitely put me on the right path.
During the challenge, I lost a total of 18.5kg, 77cms and 12% body fat, and I was the St Agnes club runner-up.
