Motivation to join the 12 Week Challenge
My PT at the time suggested the challenge to me, and it appealed to my competitive side. Once I signed up I wanted to win, and that drove me to be 100 per cent dedicated to the food coaching guidelines and to everything I did in the gym.
Most enjoyable aspect
Fernwood Salisbury has an amazing vibe of fun and friendship, which is really helpful to have while you push your fitness limits. I really feel like I am part of that now. It’s not just the fact that I spent a good three hours a day there during the challenge, it’s because I have found a group of people who care as much about fitness and wellbeing as I now do.
Key to success
My mindset. I really wanted to win, which drove me to work hard. Working hard created results and results made me believe I could win. I started doing things like RPM, which I’d actually had a fear of, and Grit Strength, which I still kind of fear! And it was conquering those fears and trying new things, pushing weights higher and seeing results which continued to inspire me.
I didn’t have any goals when I started the challenge, I just wanted to give it my all and see what came of it. Just over a month into the challenge I had lost nearly 12 kilograms, and my goal became weighing under 100 kilograms for the first time since my late teens. The three weeks where I expected to hit my goal but didn’t were the hardest on me. I was feeling tired and frustrated with the effort it took to do what I was doing, and it made me question if it all was worth it. I’m really lucky I have great friends and great gym staff who saw me through what could have easily been the decline of my drive and the end of my success.
The thing that has surprised me the most is that I haven’t stopped or given up now the challenge is over. I don’t need to earn points anymore to win, but I am still putting in the hard yards because in the end the prize I am fighting for is to be the best version of myself I can possibly be.
My goal after the challenge was to lose another 15 kilograms (three of which have come off already!) and then I’ll reassess what’s next. I am looking for every other challenge I can find to keep me on my toes!
