Motivation for doing the 12 Week Challenge

After three children, my self-esteem and body image were at an all-time low, not to mention my fitness levels. I wanted to lose the post-pregnancy weight, and I also had a specific fitness goal: I wanted to be able to run five kilometres.

Greatest challenge

As a mother-of-three who works full time, the biggest challenge was time management – finding the time to exercise, plan and pack meals and ensure I was organised. My husband was exceptionally supportive, taking the children to school so I could do 5am workouts and cooking my meal plan dinners for me, all of which he was happy to do because he said he was so pleased to see me happy again.

The social aspect was challenging at times. Within the first six weeks of the 12 Week Challenge I said no to birthday cake seven times (including my own!), but this just goes to show that even if you think you’re only having the occasional treat, if you actually keep track, it really adds up.

Most enjoyable aspect

Realising how much support I had, not just from family and friends, but also from the team at Fernwood. I think this support is what made the difference – I wasn’t in it alone and I had a whole team of people behind me, supporting me every burpee of the way!

Key to success

I had a determination to follow the challenge program, and having a clear fitness goal really helped. I was determined to be a runner and by working this into my exercise routine the improvements to my fitness levels became really obvious. I also really enjoyed the food journal and online food coaching aspect of the program; I think it’s invaluable to keep track of your energy intake.

I also realised there were a lot of things that I’d put off doing because I wasn’t happy with myself, but sometimes this becomes a catch 22 – like not wanting to do a group fitness class, because you don’t feel you’re fit enough. I really love the expression “You should live like you’re already the person you want to be”, and this became a bit of a mantra for me.

Biggest surprise

Realising that the things that scared me the most are now the things I love the most. I remember nervously sitting in the car park just dreading my first PT session, mostly because I was acutely aware of my own fitness inadequacies, but my PT, Ruby Frazer, is just amazing and under her guidance I’ve done things I would never have even attempted on my own. These sessions have now become the highlight of my exercise routine!

Next goal

Running is definitely keeping me motivated. I signed up for a five-kilometre event and I’m working towards a 10-kilometre event. I’m going to enjoy my new fitness level and am also very determined to keep off the weight that I’ve lost.
