Motivation

I’ve always wanted to be “fit”. I’ve wanted to look fit physically and lead a healthy, happy lifestyle.

I’ve tried on several occasions to do this by myself, but really struggled to stick to my goals. I’d slack off or cheat, telling myself, “Oh, I’ll start next Monday”. I saw the challenge as a way to reach my goals – it had structure! And I knew I’d have people to answer to (my personal trainer and food coach) if my motivation waned.

Low point

Social nights out with friends were challenging at times. It can be difficult to be surrounded by others eating and drinking all of the things you aren’t supposed to be having! I still went out and enjoyed myself, I just had to be very conscious and smart about what I put in my mouth.

Most enjoyable aspect

The learning aspect! I am now much better equipped with health and fitness knowledge so I can make smarter decisions in the future. Before the challenge I thought I knew enough about nutrition and exercise to lead a healthy life (just lacked the motivation and drive!) but I’ve discovered my knowledge was flawed, and a contributing factor in my lack of success prior to the challenge. I have a newfound interest in nutrition, which is very exciting.

Key to success

Persistence! I’ve learnt that our mind gives up long before the body – we just need to keep on pushing. I just didn’t give up: I pushed through the cravings, the pain, the tiredness and worked for my goal. I really wanted this, and I believe “wanting” is critical for anyone attempting to reach their goals. When you start seeing the fruits of your labour, it inspires you to keep on pushing.

Biggest surprise

It was such a surprise to discover that I really am a morning person! Gone are the days when I used sleep until midday, but this discovery didn’t happen overnight – it was the result of several weeks of routine! But I absolutely love the newfound me. Weekends no longer fly by as I’m up and enjoying my full days with loads of activity!

Next goal

Running! I’ve signed up for Sydney’s City to Surf – a 14-kilometre run from Sydney’s CBD to Bondi Beach. I’ve always considered myself a terrible runner, and I tell people I just don’t do endurance – I’m more of a quick, sharp bursts of energy type of girl! This is one challenge I’m really looking forward to conquering.
