Although happy with her life, Vanessa’s weight was affecting her health. The extra kilos left her feet aching and caused her heart to beat at a frightening pace.
Vanessa decided to put her health first and joined Fernwood Darra where she discovered how fun and energising group fitness classes can be. Now over 30 kilograms lighter, fitter than ever, and bounding with energy, the new Vanessa knows anything is possible.
What was your ‘light bulb’ moment?
“One night I realised that my heart rate simply wouldn’t slow down: my heart was struggling to cope with the weight of my body and it was putting pressure on my organs. I thought to myself ‘That’s it, I have to put my health first, this has to change,’ and my decision was made.”
Why did you choose Fernwood over other gyms or programs?
“There were no super intimidating men and woman parading around; Fernwood is a place where real women with real struggles address their health. There is no competition and no need to feel intimidated, and encouragement among staff and members is universal.”
What was or has been the most challenging thing?
“My weight loss was a mental challenge – I had to accept that to change my weight, I had to change my life patterns, and that it had to be an all or nothing commitment for it to work. But once you accept that, and embrace it, it does change your life!”
What aspects of your club do you enjoy most and why?
“I really enjoy the energy in group fitness classes. I was trying to lose weight from home, but it was the fun and energy from the instructors and the people in the classes that made all the difference… it made exercising fun, not a chore.”
What has been the biggest thing you have learnt thus far?
“Commitment is key. If you commit to it 100%, not only do results follow, but it becomes easy.”
What do you think was your key to success?
“My key to success was putting 100% into every workout – even if I’m having an off day. You can attend classes day in and day out, but if you’re only putting in a half hearted effort, it’s not going to make a big difference. When you give it your all, it changes everything.”
How has losing weight, getting fit and being healthy changed your life?
“Getting fitter has changed my mentality. Now I see every challenge in life as something achievable, not something here to conquer me. I know I can overcome anything with just a little focus and self belief.”
“I now go clothes shopping without dreading walking out feeling like the most hideous creature known to the planet – and it’s so much FUN! I’ve turned into the sexy woman I knew I always could be – and the hottest man I’ve ever seen is now the man I am able to call my boyfriend!”
What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining Fernwood?
“My advice to someone thinking about joining Fernwood would be this: Are you ready to stop feeling terrible about yourself? Have you had enough of hating yourself? Are you tired of your weight and self image holding you back from living life to the fullest? Then it’s time to accept change, let the past go, and embrace a healthier way of life. Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore, believe me, you will end up loving it. And most of all, you will end up loving yourself… what greater gift can you give to yourself than that?”
