The benefits of laughter, no joke!


Knock, knock. Who’s there? Butter! Butter who? I butternut tell you! We are sure that got you laughing.

We can guarantee that you will be wanting the giggles after you learn the big benefits of a little bit of laughter.

The science behind it

The physical response of laughter is very fast - after our senses are exposed to something funny, an electric current runs through our nervous system to our cerebral cortex (outer surface of the brain). The left side of the brain decodes the words while the right side understands the humor then the center of our brain forms an image of the humorous idea, while our emotional system releases chemicals that boosts our mood. Finally, our motor functioning makes us smile or laugh.

The benefits

We love a good laugh, especially when it feels like you have done a full ab workout. You know those good hearty laughs with your girlfriends that leave you feeling happy and relaxed? This is caused by laughter relaxing your body, by relieving tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes.

Laughter also boosts your immune system. When you laugh you are decreasing your stress hormones and increasing your immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies. This is why doctors say that laughter is one of the best medicines. 

It also releases endorphins, which promote an overall sense of wellbeing and can temporarily relieve pain. It protects your heart because when you laugh you are improving the function of your blood vessels and increasing blood flow. This can help protect against a heart attack or other cardiovascular problems.

Laughter also burns calories. We are not saying you can swap a workout with laughter, but a study found that laughing for 10-15 minutes a day can burn approximately 40 calories. So why not watch something funny while on the cardio machines for extra benefit!

That’s not to mention that when you start laughing you are genuinely going to feel great after. We have a few funnies which we think will get you giggling. Try them on a co-worker to spread the cheer.
