Upon successful completion of your SIS40215 Certificate IV in Fitness, you will be able to register as a Personal Trainer. This qualification enables you to run your own business, work within health clubs and gyms as a Personal Trainer, designing and delivering individualised training to both individuals and groups, both indoors and outdoors.

Course Structure

Successful completion of the SIS40215 Certificate IV in Fitness requires you to complete 20 units of competency with the option of completing an additional unit as listed below. These units are grouped together into 9 different modules.

Each module requires you to complete written question and answers, projects, and a variety of practical activities whilst on work placement. Practical work placement assessments will consist of a minimum of 40 hours that is spread over the duration or end of your course in a Fernwood Club (or another Gym approved by Fernwood Learning).

Qualification for SIS40215 Certificate IV in Fitness requires completion of 12 core units and 8 elective units. Units have been grouped together into learning modules as outlined below.

* Students may complete the optional unit SISFFIT012 Instruct movement programs to children aged 5 to 12 years. This unit is required to work with child of this age group. The unit is included at no additional charge.

To complete assessment for the above units a minimum of 40 hours of supervised work placement must be satisfactorily completed. This will complete the practical sections of the above units.

What will I be qualified in at the end of my Certificate IV in Fitness course?

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in a range of activities and functions within the Fitness Industry, including working independently in a broad range of settings, such as within fitness centres, gyms, community facilities and in open spaces.

Graduates have the capacity to work with individual clients, on a one-on-one basis, work with small groups, as well as train indoors and outdoors. Personal Trainers may also work with older clients as well as children and young adolescents.

Graduates will have the ability to monitor and manage business activities to operate efficiently and profitably.

Is my SIS40215 Certificate IV in Fitness qualification recognised throughout Australia?

It certainly is! Fernwood Learning courses are recognised throughout Australia. Upon completion of the SIS40215 Certificate IV in Fitness students will be able to register with Physical Activity Australia or Fitness Australia which have international registration links. Registration will enable you to work in the fitness industry and for Fernwood if you secure a role.

Is the SIS40215 Certificate IV in Fitness course for me?

You will need to be well organised with good reading and writing skills in English, be 18 years or older, have access to a computer, internet and email to complete the SIS40215 Certificate IV in Fitness online course. You need an active interest in health and physical activity and a strong desire to work in this industry. The SIS40215 Certificate IV in Fitness course covers areas such as strength and cardio training in gymnasiums, and it is expected that you are a current participant in these areas. After all, you will be later working in these areas to help people connect with activity and change their lives!

It is a requirement of units within the course to demonstrate a number of different exercises in the assessment of the qualification. If you are unable to perform certain exercises due to injury, illness or a disability you should indicate this on the Pre- Training Review and discuss with a trainer and assessor as you may not be able to complete the qualification.

The course has pre-requisite units from SIS30315 Certificate III in Fitness that must be attained prior to enrolment. See below for more information.

What time is required?

All students learn at different rates, however it is expected that you will need to commit to a minimum of 10 to 15 hours of home study per week to complete the course. A work placement component of a minimum of 40 hours is also required. This can be done in a block at the end of the course, or in small periodic shifts throughout the duration of the course. (Please note you will not be competent in any unit/module until the practical component for that module has been completed.) Work placement will provide you with the practical experience necessary to feel confident you're work ready immediately after the course and increase your employment opportunities.

Can I do my work placement in a Fernwood Club?

Where possible, Fernwood will assist you to find a suitable work placement at a Fernwood Women's Health Club. Enquiries for the 40 hours work placement at a Fernwood Gym as part of your course should be directed to Fernwood Learning. Requests for work placement at a gym other than Fernwood may incur an additional fee for a facility report by a qualified workplace trainer. This will not necessarily ensure the suitability of gyms other than Fernwood.

How much does a SIS40215 Certificate IV in Fitness cost?

The course fee is inclusive of tuition and administration costs including: on-line Learner’s Workbooks for each subject, text books, handouts and assessment, work placement diaries, access to the forum and online sections of the course as well as email and phone support.

Do I need any other qualifications?

As a minimum, you need to have completed the following units from the SIS30315 Certificate III in Fitness:

  • SISXCCS001 - Provide quality service
  • SISFFIT006 - Conduct fitness appraisals
  • SISFFIT001 - Provide health screening and fitness orientation
  • SISFFIT004 - Incorporate anatomy and physiology principles into fitness programming
  • SISFFIT003 - Instruct fitness programs
  • SISFFIT005 - Provide healthy eating information
  • SISFFIT014 - Instruct exercise to older clients
  • SISFFIT002 - Recognise and apply exercise considerations for specific populations

Individuals must also hold a current first aid and CPR certificate.

* Note: Students that have previously completed a Certificate III in Fitness from the SIS10 or SRF training packages will be required to undergo an RPL application and complete any training gaps to attain the above units prior to enrolment.
