Create a healthy habit in 21 days

We love a good habit here at Fernwood – as long as it’s a healthy habit!

In the 1960s, Dr Maxwell Maltz’s work as a plastic surgeon informed his theory that it takes approximately 21 days to get used to the changes in their bodies following surgery, and as such, it could be expected that habits take 21 days to set in too.

All our clubs are purpose-built for balance, while empowering women to shine in all aspects of their lives. Whether that’s through personal training, nutrition coaching, group fitness classes, or all of the above, we’re here to support you along every step of the way.

What is a habit?

A habit is defined as, “a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up.”

While it’s easy for us to pick up bad habits without noticing, it’s also just as easy to form strong and healthy habits that you carry with you through life.

How do I create a healthy habit?

As much as habit-forming is about creating a routine that works for you, it also requires discipline and commitment. Feel supported every time you step into your local Fernwood and start creating good habits with the power of an entire community behind you.

Start small
We talk a lot about starting with small goals here at Fernwood, and for good reason! Starting small means you’re more likely to succeed – don’t get caught in the trap of setting huge goals and feeling disappointed if you don’t quite meet the target straight away.

Give yourself a reward
If your goal is to see physical changes in your body, whether that’s toning, losing weight or getting stronger – it can take a little while before you start to notice the difference. So, treat yourself to watching your favourite show while you’re on the treadmill or cook a delicious and nutritious meal after a hard workout.

Do it everyday
This one might seem obvious, but the best way to reinforce a healthy habit is through repetition! If you’re not a morning person, find time to exercise in the evening or on your lunch break so you keep your streak going strong (or vice versa).

Make it fun
You’re more likely to keep going if you enjoy the new habit you’re trying to form. Instead of repeating the same workout over and over (which is also bad for progress!) shake your routine up with your favourite Fernwood group fitness classes or try a personal training session to keep things fresh.

Don’t be too hard on yourself
It’s easy to criticise ourselves when we fail, but that makes it so much harder to pick ourselves up again. Be kind to yourself if you miss the mark and remember, tomorrow is another day to try again!
